Have you ever noticed your heartbeat racing before a big presentation, or your stomach fluttering when you're excited? This is called interoception.
Have you ever noticed your heartbeat racing before a big presentation, or your stomach fluttering when you're excited? This awareness of internal body signals is called interoception. It’s often described as our "sixth sense," providing a window into our physiological state and influencing how we interpret and respond to emotions.
Without realizing it, our bodies are constantly giving us feedback, like a built-in dashboard that helps us navigate the flow of daily life.
Interoception connects physical sensations—hunger, pain, warmth—to emotional experiences. For example, you might clench your jaw when stressed, or feel a tight chest when anxious. By tuning into these signals, we become more skilled at identifying what we feel and why we feel that way. This self-awareness can lead to better decision-making and improved mental health, since recognizing emotions early allows for proactive self-care.

Children and adults with high interoceptive awareness often excel at emotional regulation. They can distinguish between anger and hunger, or nervousness and excitement, simply by interpreting their body's cues. Conversely, difficulties with interoception are linked to conditions like anxiety or alexithymia, where recognizing emotions is much harder.
Like any skill, interoception can be developed. Mindfulness practices, such as body scans or meditation, encourage us to notice sensations without judgment. Paying attention during exercise, monitoring breath, and asking yourself how you physically feel throughout the day are all simple ways to strengthen interoception.
